SUMMARY:Book Talk: Transnational Palestine. Nadim Bawalsa
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Nadim Bawalsa is a historian of modern Palestine. He holds a PhD in History and Middle Eastern & Islamic Studies from New York University. \nTens of thousands of Palestinians migrated to the Americas in the final decades of the nineteenth century and early decades of the twentieth. By 1936\, an estimated 40\,000 Palestinians lived outside geographic Palestine. Transnational Palestine is the first book to explore the history of Palestinian immigration to Latin America\, the struggles Palestinian migrants faced to secure Palestinian citizenship in the interwar period\, and the ways in which these challenges contributed to the formation of a Palestinian diaspora and to the emergence of Palestinian national consciousness. \nWebinar Registration – Zoom

SUMMARY:Protest in the Post-Political Era Symposium
DESCRIPTION:March 7 / Knight Auditorium of the Spurlock Museum \nProtests erupted in spring 2024 in response to the October 7\, 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel and Israel’s military response. On university campuses\, students shocked by the scale and intensity of Israel’s response took to the quad\, organizing rallies and creating encampments. Some critics of the demonstrations called the denouncements of Israeli military action antisemitic\, the equivalent of hate speech\, leaving little intellectual space for criticism or protest. At UIUC\, faced with campus unrest\, the university administration tried to draw a line between\, on one side\, the acceptable expression of political opinion and freedom of speech and\, on the other\, civil disobedience and disruption. \nIn considering the stakes of civil disobedience nationally\, one might think of the Civil Rights movement’s struggles for justice staged through boycotts and marches and in the public spaces of buses\, lunch counters\, and bridges\, and the Stonewall riot against police raids of a gay bar in New York City. Whether waged in peaceful solidarity or as a form of turbulent and deliberately disruptive resistance\, these forms of protest went beyond words\, the bodily presence of the protesters making a powerful demand for political change. But civil disobedience can come at a high cost as protesters endure forced removal\, violence\, criminalization and even incarceration. Thus\, it is often the last resort of people for whom the conventional methods of affecting change (though voting or litigation) have failed. \nThe conference speakers will address the history\, mechanism\, and goals of political protest\, looking at it from the various perspectives of ethics\, efficacy\, communication\, strategy\, solidarity\, public policy\, parliamentary channels\, and law. \nSpeakers\nAsef Bayat (Sociology\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)\nCristobal Bianchi (Art & Design\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign)\nChristina Foust (Communication Studies\, Metropolitan State University at Denver)\nRichard Gilman-Opalsky (Politics and International Affair’s University of Illinois Springfield)\nJuan González (Great Cities Institute\, University of Illinois Chicago)\nSara Safransky (Human and Organizational Development\, Vanderbilt University)\nAshwini Vasanthakumar (Legal & Political Philosophy\, Queens’ University Ontario)\nEkow Yankah (Law & Philosophy\, University of Michigan) \nProgram\n9:00-9:10 | D. SUMMARY:Tu B’Shvat Solidarity Seder
DESCRIPTION:Have you heard of Tu B’Shvat? \nIt’s sometimes called “Jewish Earth Day” and has roots in ancient agricultural practices around tending to trees. \nThis year UC Jews for Ceasefire is working in collaboration with CU MAC and SECS UIUC to learn about the Israeli occupation’s devastation of Palestinian land\, and the history of environmental activism at UIUC. We hope to strengthen the connections between local activists and build a supportive network of community members who look out for each other. We are still in the cold and darkness of winter\, and yet springtime is just around the corner! The sap is rising and so are we! \nCome join us for a warm welcoming evening of ritual\, discussion\, and food. Please reach out with any questions or accessibility needs.
