What does it mean to be an Apartheid Free Store?

An Apartheid Free Store boycotts products and companies complicit in the Israeli occupation of Palestine, in solidarity with the Palestinian people against ongoing Israeli oppression, apartheid, and colonization.

What is No Appetite for Apartheid?

The No Appetite for Apartheid in CU campaign is part of the national No Appetite for Apartheid campaign created by the Palestine Solidarity Working Group. Launched in 2022, it is meant to be a years-long movement, rather than a brief episode.

No Appetite for Apartheid is inspired by long-standing Palestinian boycott tactics and the BDS call. As No Appetite for Apartheid in CU, we are canvassing local stores in our communities and asking them to pledge to become Apartheid Free Stores by dropping food products and companies that are complicit in the colonization of Palestine from their shelves.

It’s time to turn up the heat on this apartheid regime and take apartheid off our plates with the #NoAppetiteForApartheid campaign.

What brands do I need to avoid to become an Apartheid Free Store?

A store or restaurant is considered Apartheid Free if they do not carry any of the following brands/items:

  • Coca Cola and subsidiary brands
  • Israeli agricultural products including but not limited to avocados, dates, potatoes, eggplants, grapefruits, peppers, grapes, figs, passion and sharon fruits, Israeli new potatoes, and carrots.
    • Herbs, such as basil, dill, tarragon, parsley, sage, rosemary, mint, chives and others are commonly sold by Tivall, an Israeli company that produces vegetarian foods.
  • Israeli dates often found under the following brands: king solomon dates, urban platter, star dates, sincerely nuts, hadiklaim, edeka, delilah, shah co, jordan river, galil, ventura, food to live, navafresh, carmel agrexco, anna and sarah.
  • Israeli wines with a “made in Israel” label. Most common brands include Barkan Winery (including Segal), Carmel Wineries, Golan Heights Winery, Teperberg 1870 and Binyamina Winery.
  • Culturally appropriative and pro-occupation brands:
    • Sabra founded by Strauss group, sponsor of the IOF and “authorized supplier” to the “defense ministry” and now owned by PepsiCo.
    • Sadaf  masquerades as “Middle Eastern” to infiltrate and profit off Palestinian & Arab communities while materially supporting Zionist settler economies and lobbying.
    • Osem is one of the largest food companies in Israel, producing and selling products such as Bamba, Bissli, and hummus.

Is there support for stores who join the network?

No Appetite for Apartheid in CU is working on building a consumer base who also has #NoAppetiteForApartheid. These individuals have pledged to support stores who join the Apartheid Free Store Network and prioritize shopping and eating at your establishment.

This pledge can be found here if you would like to share it with your customers.

Have other stores joined the network?

You’re one of the first stores we’ve contacted because we believe you are ethical and committed to justice and community. We know it can be intimidating to publicly and loudly stand against the colonization of Palestine and violence against Palestinians. For this reason, we will release the stores in our network on Monday, September 15 to ensure no one store is unjustly targeted by those who support the ongoing apartheid and violence.

I'm Ready to Join the Network

I am ready to join the Apartheid Free Store Network. My store or restaurant will not carry any Coca Cola (and subsidiary) products, Israeli produce, food items, or wines, or items from Sabra, Sadaf, or Osem.
